In search of conversation .:Open:. « Thread Started on Aug 16, 2009, 10:15pm »
A tall, thin, brown-haired man walked slowly down the street, looking for some source of amusement. A cigarette, as was the norm, hung lazily from his mouth, a thin curl of smoke drifting off the lit end. A sword was sheathed on his right hip, not that a sword would be of much use in these troubled times. But protection was a necessary thing, and even if it wasn't all that useful, a sword was intimidating. So hopefully those few trouble-causing passersby that carried guns around would simply leave him alone for fear of it.
The street itself was gray stone, with buildings rising three stories on either side. There were dim alleyways in which you could find all manner of unsavory things, none of which Alex was looking for. Not today, at least. No, today he was merely looking for a quiet place in which he could have some pleasant conversation with an unwary stranger. If you could rope them into it, they generally weren't impolite enough to simply walk away from the talk.
Alex grinned to himself, thinking of all the random conversations he had over the past week, including one with a rather quiet cat. He fiddled with his belt as he walked, trying to maneuver it into a more comfortable position. "Least it's nice and cool out today." he muttered softly to himself.

Ember walked down the seemingly empty street, her nose buried in a book. A few tendrils of hair escaped the bun on the back of her head as a light breeze passed. Her footsteps light almost unheard.
Most people would have thought her insane for walking alone during these times especially in a place like this but she didn't care, she was able to take care of herself. Nothing would be able to sneak up on her with her senses if someone was foolish enough to try anything.

"Hey, you!" came a voice from an alley on the man's right. He turned his light blue eyes over to see what appeared to be a filthy human, who obviously hadn't bathed in weeks, if that. "You wouldn't happen to be able to sp-p-pare some cash, wouldja?" The alley-dweller sank to his knees and groveled, making faint bowing motions. "Please, man, I'm beggin' ya."
Alex gave it some thought, but he was running low on cigarettes and he knew that he was going to buy some booze later, so he needed all the cash he could get. He didn't have a job, so income was a bit short. He generally just stole what he needed. He always thought it funny that someone as immoral and unchristian as he was could end up as an angel. "Sorry mate, but I'm a bit short myself. I suggest you get yourself cleaned up and try and find a job. Maybe shake the heroin addiction." he said, as he nodded to the filthy man's arm, which was covered in scars from hypodermic needles.
With that, Alex walked off, turning the corner of the street to almost crash headlong into a beautiful young woman. He managed to dodge her at the last moment, wondering why she didn't stop when he did. Then he looked up to see that she was reading a book. He flexed his wings and took a deep breath. He figured that she would be a challenge to get talking. "Pardon, miss," he called "But can I inquire as to the book you're reading?"
He flicked the butt of his spent cigarette behind him as he spoke, and pulled out another one, this one more for show than for actual smoking. He lit it and shoved it between his lips.

Ember stopped walking as the question registered in her head. She had sensed the man, his scent told her that and thathe wasn't human, she was knew she was in no danger so had not looked up from her book. Odd was all she thought most people let her be if they saw her with a book. "Dante's Inferno" As the sharp smell of smoke reached her nose she flinched back a bit "that a horrid and disgusting thing to do" She looked up briefly glaring at the cigarette between his lips.

Alex thought for a moment of Dante's "Inferno", recalling the premise of the book. It detailed the layout and structure of hell. With all of the devils and demons running around these days, it was an unwise thing to be reading out in the open. "That's an interesting book. But why read it when you can simply ask any of the score of demons that haunt these streets?"
He tensed slightly at her flinch, wary of any danger. He didn't believe that this girl posed a threat, but she was definitely not human, and one must be ready for anything. If necessary, he could have his sword out of his sheathe in an instant. Then she spoke, admonishing him for his smoking. Against his better nature, he laughed. She was like his mother, scolding him when she caught him smoking for the first time.
Alex pulled the cigarette out of his mouth and held it up. "What, this? Trust me, there are far worse things in the world. But if it pains you that much for me to do it-" he paused as he ground the cig out on the wall to his left. "Then I can just as easily put it out."

"I read it seeing as I don't feel the need to wander up to a demon and strike a conversation with them" Ember closed her book with a light thud "I could care less about how you destroy your own body, the smell is all that bothers me" She watched warily as he put out the cigarette on the wall "thank you, now is there something you need tell me or can I leave?" Emner tapped her foot a little impatiently ready to turn around and leave.

Alex sighed softly. This one was a bit more standoffish than the rest of the crowd. On this deserted street it was understandable because anything could happen. And usually did. He frowned and bent slightly to brush some of the dust off his tattered, faded denim jeans. "I didn't really have anything all that important to say," he replied, repeating the same motion on his shirt, puffing out little clouds of dust with each new swipe of his hand. "I was merely looking for some intelligent conversation, and you looked as if you could provide."
Alex had started the practice of conversing with random strangers no more than a month earlier. His social skills were lacking, to be sure, but then again, practice makes perfect. He smiled though, thinking that sometimes gruff people were softer than others at heart, and that fact gave him an idea.
"But I suppose if you have no interest, I'll go home. One turn-down a day is enough for me. Just go write in my journal, I think." he said, crestfallen, as he turned to walk away. He frowned as he turned away from her, wondering if she would take the bait.

Ember eyed the man as he turned to go. She knew that he was playing at something, giving her the choice to leave and forget this incident or call out to him in guilt but why she was not entirly sure. It could be possible he just wanted to talk to someone but during these times no one really knew the intentions of others. After a few moments of internal debate she let out a sigh, curiosity winning over all else. "My names Ember" she called out.

Alex continued to walk for a moment, pausing to stuff his hand in his pocket and check his little cell phone- not as if it would have any messages. No-one knew his number. Then the girl behind him spoke, calling out her name. The one simple word brought a rush of images through his mind. Firstly, her eyes, which had caught him roughly as soon as she had looked into his. Then after that he was trapped in a raging inferno, cinders and ashes floating down onto his tattered wings.
"You are not worthy of this place, this place of pain and agony. Return to your world." called a low gruff voice, raging with authority.
Alex shook his head vigorously, shaking off memories of the past. He turned, and looked at the girl, not speaking for a moment, merely gazing her up and down. "A pleasure to meet you, Ember, my name is Alex." he said quietly, wondering what it was about this girl that had caused him to lapse into his memory.

Ember raised an eyebrow as she watched the guy shake his head. She nodded as he intoduced himself. "So Alex, what brings you to this lovely part of town?" She shifted her wait onto her right foot as she crossed her arms over her chest
